a few days after getting back to chicago from boston, we were on the road again. 10hours later, somewhere down that purple road that is gps ignorance.. were we in ohio? idaho? kansas any more? who knows. neat little corn fields stretched along the side of the highway. x was passed out in the other van, trying to catch his next wind for the last leg home.

now i'm home again. finally. in front of the computer working away like i've worked before. i'm processing images that have waited far too long for my attention. sorry to those who've been waiting..

photos from stacy and geoff's wedding

i loved how laid back everyone was at s+g's wedding. it was khakis and summer dresses in cape cod, but really pretty and elegant. so was i the only one wearing inappropriately dark clothing for that beautiful sunny saturday? yea, i think so.

i was slicker than molasses in june, but a glass of that yummy sangria. and another of "something blue" kept me even keeled. i would have gone for another, but i had to get the rental back to boston and fly back to chicago that evening. yea, and i had just flown in that morning. my traveling kung-fu was on!

still departed

successfully recovered from the service pack crash that rendered my laptop useless a few weeks ago. thank god! some of my working files were only on the laptop. it would have been a real pita otherwise.

i've decided to upgrade to windows 7 rc, as windows vista has given me bucketloads of trouble ever since i started using it. have heard great things about the release candidate, so am crossing my fingers and upgrading my system. tried to install it on parallels on the mac (to test drive it), but neither the 64bit or 32bit installs would work. oh wells..

while i've got loads of other work on my plate to get through since i just got back home the other day, i need to stabilize my working platforms. the upgrade should only take "a few hours". great! thankfully i've got a multi-computer setup, so i can keep working while my laptop reconfigures itself.

update: what could possibly go wrong?.. except after cleaning the keyboard on my mac (i felt the urge!), half the keys don't work. so now no working computers but my poor iphone. wow! this was unexpected..

a slight departure

a month on the road and anxious to get home. my laptop crapped out on me two weeks ago as it was installing a service pack. i knew better than to install major updates to the os while on the road. i had a funny feeling too. should have trusted my instincts. i don't have a recovery disk either, so restoring the laptop will be an interesting endeavor.

thankfully i've been using logmein.com to remotely access my main mac computer at home. it's a fantastic service that offers amazingly transparent access to your computers. i had been trying for awhile to get ssh and vnc running, but in the end, the simplicity of logmein has won. while i'm sure you'd also love to read about nat tunnelling and port forwarding (like i DO!), trust me on this one and go with the web service.

i even managed to remotely troubleshoot a friend's computer with logmein's rescue service. it's hellified expensive for even the monthly rescue service, but if i were in that field, i would definitely look at the purchase. it made troubleshooting a breeze. you log into your rescue control panel, the client receives an exe file to run, then magic connections are created from your computer to theirs. sooooo much better than talking someone through countless setup menus.

my one major question would be about security, but i know they'd have things more secure than i probably could. and did i mention it's really easy?
. . . . .

as you can see (if you cared to), sugar sync has recently found a place on my dock and in my workflow. it's temporary for now, as i test out its service and capabilities. it won out over other online backup and sync providers (such as mozy and carbonite). i think the main thing was that it had an iphone app. hopefully now i'll have better access to my important documents, even if i'm on the road.

logmein also has a fairly terrific iphone app. i'm able to control my 24" imac behemoth from the 3.5" confines of my iphone. it's really adorable! and amazing.. i can't wait to play global thermonuclear warfare!! china is SO dead!

while this doesn't seem to have anything to do with photography, part of photography for me is running this business of mine. which i'll admit i'm not especially good at. but some of these tools seem to offer better ways for me to stay organized and on top of things.
. . . . .

photo updates to come when i get back home. i haven't been able to d/l my photos anywhere. i should probably put that eye-fi card to good use..

yes, two weeks without updates and this is what you get. i'm sorry!.. :)

remains of the day

for e+d's wedding in rockport, i stayed at the york house, a b&b run by mary & dick york. except for a single mishap with someone else's reservations, my stay was very pleasant.

the room was quaintly decorated (not that i noticed); their breakfast included some really fresh, sweet fruit; and there was a piano downstairs (there was also a piano at the applegate river lodge in oregon for p+m's wedding). i don't know why, but i actually craigslisted pianos in new york the other week. is that just silly of me? yeaaah..

oh, the york house is also literally like a block from the train station. which made it super convenient to hop in and out of town.

i met kory at j+j's wedding a few months back. he was extremely friendly and entirely curious about my approach to photography. i think the image you capture is very much about your relationship (or feeling) to that thing. so kory's opennness will be a very good thing.

the first three images which i've pulled from his portfolio are as beautiful as you'll ever get from ansel adams or dorothea lange. they're pretty, evocative, emotional, personal, and playful.

i'm very much looking forward to seeing kory develop and shoot more. all photos by kory johnson.
