a month on the road and anxious to get home. my laptop crapped out on me two weeks ago as it was installing a service pack. i knew better than to install major updates to the os while on the road. i had a funny feeling too. should have trusted my instincts. i don't have a recovery disk either, so restoring the laptop will be an interesting endeavor.
thankfully i've been using
logmein.com to remotely access my main mac computer at home. it's a fantastic service that offers amazingly transparent access to your computers. i had been trying for awhile to get ssh and vnc running, but in the end, the simplicity of logmein has won. while i'm sure you'd also love to read about nat tunnelling and port forwarding (like i DO!), trust me on this one and go with the web service.
i even managed to remotely troubleshoot a friend's computer with logmein's rescue service. it's hellified expensive for even the monthly rescue service, but if i were in that field, i would definitely look at the purchase. it made troubleshooting a breeze. you log into your rescue control panel, the client receives an exe file to run, then magic connections are created from your computer to theirs. sooooo much better than talking someone through countless setup menus.
my one major question would be about security, but i know they'd have things more secure than i probably could. and did i mention it's
really easy?
. . . . .
as you can see (if you cared to),
sugar sync has recently found a place on my dock and in my workflow. it's temporary for now, as i test out its service and capabilities. it won out over other online backup and sync providers (such as mozy and carbonite). i think the main thing was that it had an iphone app. hopefully now i'll have better access to my important documents, even if i'm on the road.
logmein also has a fairly terrific iphone app. i'm able to control my 24" imac behemoth from the 3.5" confines of my iphone. it's really adorable! and amazing.. i can't wait to play global thermonuclear warfare!! china is SO dead!
while this doesn't seem to have anything to do with photography, part of photography for me is running this business of mine. which i'll admit i'm not especially good at. but some of these tools seem to offer better ways for me to stay organized and on top of things.
. . . . .
photo updates to come when i get back home. i haven't been able to d/l my photos anywhere. i should probably put that eye-fi card to good use..
yes, two weeks without updates and this is what you get. i'm sorry!.. :)
