b+e engagement portraits

in new york for three days before i headed out to san francisco on sunday. i managed to squeeze in an engagement portrait session with b+e on saturday. it was grey and overcast with a slight drizzle, but the sun peeked out later on. as long as it's not raining cats & dogs, i actually like the overcast. especially in the summer. it makes for very pretty lighting. i cannot wait to be in new york for longer than a week.

days melt by like careless thoughts. one moment i'm in new york, rain drops easing their way onto the sidewalk as i talk with my mom on the phone (a rare occurrence.. the conversation, not the rain). as my emotions well up in me, i talk to her like i've never expected to talk to her before and a part of me finally clicks into place. i'm standing at the top of the stairway to penn station, travellers passing by me oblivious to the enormity of my conversation. i breathe a sigh of gratitude when we finally finish talking, thankful for the courage to change my life.
the next day i call my father. it's a strange conversation, which shouldn't surprise me. we've always had awkward conversations. as i talk to him, i let go of my past and i let go of the expectations i have of my dad. mostly. it's not complete, so i suppose we have more to talk about. interestingly enough, he says almost exactly the same thing my mom had said to me the previous day.. "don't worry, everything will be alright." i suppose they're big worriers.
i close my eyes and it seems like the next minute i'm racing to philadelphia. new jersey and rosemont, illinois quickly follow in succession. days melt and nights freeze.

hello again

it's been two weeks since our last update. but who's counting?
i was shooting a wedding a few weeks back and my camera died in the middle of action. talk about cool under pressure. it's now on its merry way to the factory for a check up.
the next week as i was packing to head to philly, i decided i would leave my other camera behind. such a rarity for me, being without a camera. but what the hell was i going to do with photos when i barely had time to tie my shoes.
so it sat at home...
i remember one morning, as we drove along kelly drive, which is this pretty spectacular meander through philly's woods and along one of its rivers. the sun was taking a healthy stroll through morning and i had rolled the window a little to let in the air. it was crisp and quite perfect. i don't normally like the cold, but somehow, the breeze reminded me of childhood and elementary school and warm coffee cake.
we rolled through traffic and past construction. up ahead, the river bent a corner and a bridge stood knee deep in its waters. my mind wandered as the sun glinted off the river, a faraway mist slowly drifting past the bridge. i thought about taking a picture, then realized all i had was my phone.
as we passed, i took a thousand pictures in my mind. click click click i went... goodbye river, goodbye childhood! i'll be visiting you again when a sparkle of sunshine reminds me of a river in philadelphia, or when the scent of summer takes me back to swinging in the park.

heidi asked me to shoot her first maternity photos. knowing how i am, she was wise enough to contact me well in advance. fortunately, there was a little itty-bitty crack in my schedule. so we got together last weekend in the sweltering heat and snapped some shots.
i love the photos on the third page. it feels like a little mini raising arizona. joey as nicholas cage and heidi as holly hunter. the bathroom shot was totally inspired. i really like the naturalness of it, though really, who combs their hair while sitting on the toilet, smiling at their husband as he reaches for his toothbrush?

ahh, yay! a final set of teasers for m+t's wedding, rounded out with photos from the reception. the sunset was pretty spectacular that day. i dare say it was showing off a little.

body project nyc

i shot some photos the other night for emily and the body project, as she was guiding jaina. i had shot her a little while back, but she wanted more photos which showed her teaching and some headshots in addition. with its intensely red walls and earthy brown wooden floors, the lighting and color in the space can be very warm and inviting if lit & shot properly.
i brought my three speedlight units, which performed very well. and in a totally unbiased way, i really like some of the shots i managed to capture of emily.

oh boy, i dropped off the face of the planet this last week. anime central was an extreme amount of work with little rest. lots of interesting characters as always.
i'm almost back home to new york, but i have the last leg from philly to travel. finally a few moments to process through and post more of m+t's wedding photo teasers.
