hanging out at frazee paint

apparently there wasn't much paint being sold today, so these guys were hanging out with their friends in front. i like to go to the various paint stores to pick up their gallons and quarts of oops (reject) paint for cheap. some forward thinking mexican construction workers had swooped in a few days earlier to do the same, so selection was pretty limited at this store.

these last few days have been busy for me. i went up to l.a. to finish painting nate & yuki's nursery room. it ended up being more work than i originally anticipated, but it also looks super cuter than originally anticipated.
they had purchased a set of bedsheets for the room which had these adorable animals on it. i created stencils of the animals and then ran a parade of them across the top perimeter of the room. unfortunately, they didn't have any sort of stepladder lying around, so i stacked a toolbox on top of a nightstand, and stood on top of that to paint.
it was a great chance to catch up with nathan, who i've been great friends with since college. he also played me all of the mc chris cd's he had lying around. how can you go wrong with a cd entitled "mc chris dungeon master of ceremonies"? you can't!

the sunset light was absolutely gorgeous on this particular evening, all golden and orange and everything that's beautiful and spectacular about southern california. i happened to be walking by as it was shining on this orange bamboo which my parents have growing in the garden, making it practically glow.

tim runs the donut store next to my brother's computer store, which is next to my sister's gift shop. he's a hard-working entrepreneur who never stops thinking about how to support his family. it seems to pay off, as there's usually a stream of kids from the nearby schools who drop in for a snack or two.

this is a great portrait, even though the camera decided that the background was more important to focus on than the person. my shooting style is very quick, so sometimes i don't always have time to double check focus. the eyes, the smile and the background really make it for me. maybe in a decade or two, people will look at this photo and think, "$3.50 for a gallon of milk? wow!"
