a few birthdays and a wedding to celebrate up at mitchell's. i love the rock climbing group because they're such an intense group of individuals. there's not a single person there who isn't etched with some sort of flair in their personality. connections between some of the people go back decades and i know there are many stories and secrets to tell.

40 below summer @ the starland ballroom

after a long car ride into the depths of jersey, with lightning strikes in the distance warning of the coming thunderstorms, we ended up at a barnlike bar/club venue where they served $3 slices of cardboard like pizza. i was pretty hungry, so i ended up getting two slices over the course of the night. i regretted the second one, which bit me back just as much as i bit into it. sometimes your food fights you.
fans of 40 below summer were real die hards, forming a large crowd in front of the stage, the occasional mosh pit scattered here and there. i threaded my way through the crowd, taking pictures as i went along. despite the intensity of the music and the seeming edge of people, i found most everyone to be real friendly.

what a very long weekend indeed. up to poughkeepsie by train, a taxi into new paltz, and then a serendipitous meeting with ed & his family at a diner, which netted me a ride to mitchell's. i was afraid i was gonna have to walk the x number of miles from new paltz to mitchell's, with x being the amount of random wandering i would be doing searching for his spot. spirits guide me!
i cut my evening at mitchell's a little short, as i had a photo shoot with gary the next day. as always, a complete gallery of photos to follow, though i'm getting dangerously backlogged with work.

racin' down the highway from vertical horizons

on sunday, i went with gary and his crew to the race track located somewhere in upstate new york. albany maybe? it was a long ride along the freeways of ny, though not at all uneventful. like scenes from the fast & the furious, people would occasionally throttle their cars down the highway, doing big digits and burning turbo. more photos to come...

father and son at 40 below summer

i met jeff and his son, ian, at the end of the 40 below summer show. ian was waiting around to get autographs of the band. it's pretty sweet having your father support your musical tastes, as eccentric as they may be, and being there to help you backstage. that's pure love right there! ian seemed pretty excited, so i took some shots of him with a few band members and then i captured father & son. jeff later wrote me, "We have been to Starland about 45 times and it's experiences like last night that makes it all worth while."
