i love this photo because it feels like such a painting. the colors are super pretty, though also subtle. and i like the strikingness of the sky and dark silhouette underneath. also, i like thinking about the changing perspective of the nearby gas stations on the bottom, to the brownstones in the distance and the skyline in the very back with the empire state building all lit up. really pretty, i wonder how it would work as a large format print.

for me this was hatnim's other five star shot. i love how cute and quirky it is. the composition is totally cool. and it mirrors joel's formal shot from a+j's wedding (#4 on the first page). how funny is that?

hatnim is the first photographer i've come across whose style resembles mine almost to a tee, though we both also have our uniqueness. it's funny, because she generally seems very quiet and in the background, whereas i'm very active. her photos are on the first two pages. more teasers to come.

some favs from otakon

i think back on otakon every now and then (i know, it's only been two weeks!) and i think how supremely blessed i am. that was the toughest i'd ever worked, in my life! and it was also one of the most memorable experiences of my life. i was surrounded by some of the most loving and capable support this side of the quasar, and people got to experience a bit of life magical.
then i look back on these pictures (and all the rest of them) and i'm blown away by the moments i remember. whether i knew it at the time or not, i suppose i was affecting people's lives, just as much as they were touching mine. there's the magic of possibility at these anime conventions. i thought it was hilarious when people asked me to sign their prints on sunday. rock star status, all of us. thank you everyone for believing.

i got back home and found joel's cd's of images from a+j's wedding. yum, he did a great job! i love his eye for formals (so unique and almost geometric or compositional) and his candles shot at the bottom of the page is brilliant!

the long road home

6:30am and we were pulled over on the side of the road. we'd made it most of the way back from indiana and had but a scant two hours left before philadelphia. but it was all too much and our bodies needed rest. i would have passed out right away, but i couldn't stop thinking about how i hadn't taken a single shot since otakon. so here we were, catching no more than a half hour power nap, and i was wasting half of that time fiddling with my camera. the sky was gorgeous, as it normally is at this hour. the air was crisp. i took the shot, staring at the geometry of crops in the distance. then i passed out.
i was awoken fifteen minutes later. my mind reeled as i tried to get my bearings. we shot off again, barreling on home. my hand reached for the leftovers of red bull sitting duly on the dash. i gulped what was left and threw the can away. this was gonna be the hardest two hours of my life, my mind screamed at me.
i've been sleeping and recovering since then. i made it back into town last night in time to shoot a wedding today. oh what a splendid weekend this will be! no conventions and no weddings. no worries. no woman no cry.
