finally a moment a breath a pause.

driving to chicago again. this time around the colors were most remarkable. nearing the end of our thirteen hour drive, i was drifting in and out of a fitless sleep. i realized xavier was done tired from the long haul and needed either to sleep as much as i did or my company to keep him going. he got neither. poor x. i remember coming to and seeing trees running along the freeway's edge. some bare, some yellow, a few flaring with reddened leaves. prince was blasting in the background, raspberry beret or controversy or some extended remix that x had relentlessly hunted down years ago. there was a starkness to the outlines of the bare trees displaced against their leafed cousins. we would race by the whole copse, their blurred forms disappearing away from us and i would have the sense we were travelling through many places and times. then my exhaustion would overtake me again and my eyes would shut, compelled by forces beyond my control.
