baby makes three

nathan & yuki finally had their baby the other week. she's a pretty young thing, not nearly as deformed as most babies tend to be in their early stages. i'm surprised at how easy going she is. i always imagine babies crying and carrying on. but she was quiet as a crib, even as nathan placed her on the display stand with the exquisitely handcrafted dolls which yuki's parents had sent them.

i've been shooting with a totally different camera these last two months. has anyone noticed? previously, i had been using the canon 30d, which i totally loved. i had spent about eight months with the camera, day in and day out, learning to use it. i felt i'd figured out its strengths and weaknesses pretty well. but for these last two months, i've been using the nikon d2hs. as with all things new, it takes a while before you start to understand and appreciate the new way of doing things.
so i think i've gotten to the point where i don't hate the new camera and i feel this photo clearly demonstrates the difference between the two systems. there's a certain clarity of detail and color tonality which the nikon captures that's just, well, different from the way my canon would see things.
is it better or worse? who's to say, since everything's subjective anyways. and really, i've always stood by the claim that it's not your equipment, but how you use it. but i'm happy to say that at the very least i don't hate my nikon anymore.

shaking caesar

a group of us went to the ucla shakespeare reading & performance group's scene night this last week, which is where i first got my feet wet performing on the grand stages of ucla's dormitory rec rooms. i never knew i wanted to perform until i went to auditions for the shakespeare group and exploded.
the group's main tenet is one of inclusion, regardless of theatrical experience. if you want to perform, there'll be a role for you, even if it is citizen #3. there's also a tendency to take the bard's work and reinterpret it through different lens. so you can end up with the godfather's much ado or tap dancing hillbilly romeo & juliet.
all of this helps introduce regular people to shakespeare's work and to performing in general. i don't think i would have gotten into theater otherwise, which is saying a lot, since so much of what i currently do is theatrically based. nowadays, though, my interest is more in allowing the audience to be the star, as opposed to taking so much of the stage myself.
this helps explain my love of photography. it's my opportunity to draw you in and let you shine, regardless of where we are or what we're doing. because really, life magical exists in every moment. it's just up to us to tap into it and believe.
