four chan at otakon

the amount of creativity and the degree to which a lot of the young attendees dress up at otakon blows me away. there's a fierceness and a fearlessness in the air that's remarkable and refreshing. imagine downtown baltimore with its white collar workers and supporting blue collar laborers being invaded by 20,000-30,000 anime loving youngsters, half of whom are decked out as their favorite characters. and downtown baltimore definitely has some ruff sections. one wrong turn and you start to wonder which way back to kansas. but that all seems to fall by the wayside for otakon.
sometimes i wish i could just concentrate on taking photos at otakon and not have to work. otakon is perhaps the biggest anime convention on the east coast and people come to see and be seen. at least it's the biggest one i've been to, and i've been to my fair share by now. half of the time i'm busy handling customers, the other half i'm totally exhausted and wondering where my next wave of energy is going to come from, and the final half i'm trying to figure out how to move product. that's a whole lotta halves to put together. really, the photos would just be ridiculous if i could focus solely on that. happily, i learn tons from everything outside of my camera. and i still manage to get a grip of great shots.

sunrise in baltimore

flying from orange county to new york, i got in late during the night. i struck up a conversation with my plane partner, who happened to run sneakerpimp.com. he was super friendly and ended up giving me a lift to the L train from jfk airport, which was really nice because taking the airtrain/A train combo from jfk into brooklyn can be a long, tedious process.
the next day i grabbed the train out to philly, helped my friend xavier pack and prepare for otakon, got a few hours of sleep, and the following morning we drove into baltimore. the thought struck me on the drive to baltimore at about 4:30am that we were both fairly eccentric individuals. obviously.
reaching baltimore around 6am, we checked into our hotel and caught this pretty sunrise. two hours of sleep later, we headed to the baltimore convention center and started setting up the booth. for some reason, as physically intensive as working these conventions is, it's such a rewarding experience to work with xavier that i keep coming back given the opportunity.
i would provide links to photo galleries of previous anime conventions i've done with xavier, but the internet connection at the hotel is stupidly slow, it's 2:30am, and i have to wake up in five hours to continue working.
okay okay, i'm a glutton for punishment, so here are the galleries from anime central (may 2007).. drive out, acen2007, drive back. i'm sure i missed a gallery for wizard world philadelphia sometime between then and now. but i really have to get to sleep.

i had a photoshoot last weekend with my friend sam, the massage therapist. not only does he do great body work (check his website), he's an amazing person, totally giving and very loving. he's had his practice for years now and is looking to expand, so he asked me to drop by and take photos to help promote his business. do drop him a line if you're in the southern california area and in need of some loving hands.
