mother and son

hospital audiences inc (hai), a non-profit organization, brought a group of soldiers wounded in iraq up to new york city for a weekend out on the town. i had a chance to tag along, meet with the soldiers, their family members and loved ones, and capture photos of the day. it's been a remarkable experience to hear people's stories, to talk and connect, and to see faces light up as people get a chance to do things they might not otherwise do.

friday's journey included a cruise on the world yatch down pass the statue of liberty and around the island of manhattan. it was a superbly beautiful day, sunny and breezy, perfect for capturing memories. later in the evening, there was a welcoming reception for the soldiers at the museum of the city of new york.

more goings-on tomorrow and sunday, though i'll only be around for the rest of tomorrow's events. i'm looking forward to seeing everyone again tomorrow.

belle's leaving soon to go back home to london. a sad day, as she's an incredible artist with a tremendously open heart.

friends at home

came home unexpectedly last nite to a group of friends hanging out. i'd picked up thing & minja from lauren's in preparation for shooting thing's tale. it feels like an eternity since i've last seen everyone and it was sweet to see everyone again. we sat and caught up like kumbayah, talking about the weeks that had passed.

thing's tale, the beginning.

it's been a long time since i've poured my creativity into anything other than photography. seems like it's time for me to go beyond presenting pretty pictures to you. this story has been sitting with me for a little while now, and during my past two weeks out in the midwest, i finally decided to nurture it to life.

laying in bed at the embassy suites in rosemont, sick with a cold and racked with chills, the first line came to me in an effortless daze. it wasn't until my fifteen hour drive back from indiana two weeks later, that i finally had enough time to finish discovering the first part of this (learning to) love story.

as far as i know, the rest of the story is still writing itself.

as pinks passed to purples

somewhere in between a graphic novel and an online comic, thing's tale follows a format i established with tickle & boom (a piece i developed for dancelikeforever in conjunction with ron garcia). looking back on tickle & boom all these months later is an interesting experience. like a person peering in on a party from outside, there's a sense of separation, as if i'd never been involved in creating it. the subtleties of text and story, intent and extent are lost on me until i slow myself down and take the time to experience it all over again. these are all interesting life lessons for me. probably more than i care or am able to elaborate on in these short paragraphs.

i hope to have the first section of thing's tale done and posted sometime.. soon. eventually.

goodbye indiana! hello rain..

fifteen hours to drive back to philadelphia, oy! the first three hours we faced torrential rain the likes of which i'd never driven through before. turning on the radio, annie lennox's "here comes the rain again" played fitfully. the rain stopped for one brief hour near the end of the trip and probably ended up adding three hours to what was already an overlong drive. i hate the taste of red bull, but i wound up popping three. or four. i can't remember anymore.

even once we made it back to philadephia, it was another three hours to unload the vans. to be honest, my heart sunk once i realized we were unloading that morning. my eyes were bleary, my mind was blurry, and my body was ready to quit. where i got the strength from lord only knows, as the red bulls had winged themselves dry.

that was the roughest eighteen hours of my life i'd experienced in like forever. sorry for the lack of updates these last few days.

friends with strangers on the train

ha ha! home at last! it was a scant four hours that separated me in philly from my bed in brooklyn. on the train ride from philly to new york, i made friends with some friendly folks. it helped greatly in passing the time, and i wished i could have pocketed everyone for the final leg of my trip home.

alas, getting back to ny's penn station, i ended up catching the uptown train instead of the downtown. gads! when i finally reached the L train (the home stretch!), it was going to be a 25 minute wait for the next train. with no patience left in me, i headed for the street, grabbed a cab and coughed up the fare to get me home, stat! it was money well spent.
