kip & heidi are getting married

happy september! i'll be shooting kip & heidi's wedding today in dumbo. the weather looks to be splendid. gorgeous and sunny, with a touching breeze to cool off the slight warmness of it all. the location is terrifically beautiful, as the manhattan & brooklyn bridges converge on the greenery of the empire-fulton ferry state park.

friday cruise

i joined hospital audiences (hai) last weekend, as they brought a group of soldiers who had been wounded out in iraq up to new york for a weekend out on the town. the soldiers were joined by a family member or loved one and i was so fortunate to be a part of it all. immediately after arriving in the city from washington dc, they were taken on a private cruise around manhattan, courtesy of world yatch.

more photos from the weekend to follow..

max & sabrina are getting married

i had a chance to shoot max & sabrina's engagement portraits in central park last sunday. what a beautiful day it was. the views and vistas in central park are gorgeous, with the immensity of the cityscape towering over its green preserves. there are so many nooks and crannies in the park, we barely scratched the surface in our three hour sojourn. while the weather was slightly on the warm side, we stopped for ice cream midway through. yum!

thing and ooglio hang out

why oh why did i spend last night playing with my new iphone instead of updating my website? i dunno. these things happen. maybe it was the two and a half hours i journeyed back and forth to the fedex facility in order to pick up my iphone. or maybe it was the additional two hours i spent activating my iphone (grueling! i think the woman helping me really was dyslexic). but i figured i deserved a little me time.

though it has its quirks and problems, the iphone is one of the sexiest devices i've ever laid hands on. it's by far the most user-friendly pda on the market today. great work, apple. i'm excited to see what the next generation of iphones holds in store for the world at large.

my guess is that the iphone will bust the personal digital assistant market wide open, just as the ipod blew up the personal music player market. it just needs about a dozen or two tweaks to its interface before it's totally ready for prime time.

group portrait at moma

i wasn't planning on seeing the hai group again on sunday because of another photoshoot i had scheduled, but i didn't have a chance to say goodbye to everyone on saturday. so after a mad dash through the east village to pick up some cakes from black hound (their chocolate chocolate mousse cake is to die for!) and then midtown to pick up some photo prints as parting presents, i finally caught up with them at moma.

our very affable and capable tour guide, anne, led us through jackson pollock and then onward to richard serra's exhibit. while the serra exhibit has received a huge amount of publicity, i was actually more impressed with dan perjovschi's collection of cartoon drawings and doodlings right outside the richard serra exhibit. there were lots of people milling around the courtyard in front of his wall, pointing at the different cartoons and commenting on things. i felt it was so much more inclusive and interactive than serra's large steel sculptures (which are beautiful, but the experience is short lived, somewhat anti-climactic and a little distant).

finally, it was out to the garden for a group portrait, back to the bus, some hurried goodbyes and that was that. i've been totally surprised by the experience of the weekend and my reaction to it all. walking away from everyone, a huge wave of emotion overcame me.. happy to have met everyone and sad to see them go.

one of the most amazing parts of this experience has been seeing everyone live their lives and enjoy their moments, with their loss and disability being what it is. the support and care, love and nurturing of their family members and loved ones has also really blown me away. their stories, their relationships, and honestly, just their perseverence, it all washed over me until i had to sit down and let the enormity of it pass through me. i only wish i had more time to talk to everyone and learn.

anytime you guys are in new york, call me up. it'd be my absolute pleasure to see you again.

mother & son, husband & wife

saul and his mom and amanda are the greatest trio this side of rio. aside from really caring for one another in a way that makes me smile, they have a shared love of shopping and were so excited for a chance to see new york and shop new york. last night after most everyone else had retired to their rooms, we took a walk through times square. we ended up in a foot locker, where i chatted with his mom. such a sweetheart, she seemed overjoyed to be out with them and caring for her son.

today at rockefeller cafe, i smiled as they showed me their lacoste bag, fresh from shopping that morning before the outting to the top of the rock.

brothers

marco and his younger brother jose. yesterday, jose was pretty quiet when i was talking with him, but today he was very comfortable and chatty. he seemed to have a great time going to the top of the rock, even though the morning clouds obscured most of manhattan. being young and having never been to new york, it was all quite a lot to take in. i made sure to tell him crazy stories about manhattan.

there's an interactive light room at the top of the rock which was both fascinating and frustrating. at certain times, it would magically light up and play sounds, bathing the entire room and its occupants in vibrant colors. sadly, there was no rhyme or reason to when it would do this. a large group of us were totally taken with the room, we were like babies with shiny keys.

husband and wife

james and diana are like yin and yang, which is interesting for me to observe and relate to. he's got a fiery spirit of adventure and she has a deep pool of love & tenderness. i'm not sure how deep it is yet, but it seems deep. like down there. they say their marriage started with a friendship and it's been vital to their success & happiness.

there are still so many stories to discover, i wish i had more time to spend with everyone. i have a different photoshoot tomorrow, but i'm hoping to drop by one last time to see everyone and say goodbye at least.
