last day of the weekend outing.. that day it was a trip to the museum of modern art, where our tour guide showed us through jackson pollock and then onto richard serra's steel sculptures. tj was playful that day and gave me his best deeply-concentrated-on-art pose. finally it was out to the garden for a big group portrait and then good-byes for me.

reminders of home. green leaves, soft light, roses blooming. walks under canopies of leaves, dirt sifting underneath, soft prints in the soil. in the distance, the figure of my mom tending to her garden peeks through the silhouette of trees and branches.

it was to the top of the rock on saturday morning. a steady cloud cover had draped midtown manhattan, and while it was slowly burning off, most of manhattan would remain shrouded for our time up there. happily, there was an interactive light room which held everyone's attention for a while. the room would cheerily light up and chirp in blips and bleeps as we tried to figure out how to make it explode.
lunch in the rockefeller cafe, midday musicals, and an evening picnic at the brooklyn promenade, with a spectacular view of night-time manhattan from across the river way.

"take my picture" at coney island

walking down the boardwalk, i heard a man singing short catches of a sweet song. intrigued, i slowed down and as he passed, i looked at him. catching my eye, he stopped and asked me to take his photo. then, in a strange language he sang to me of love and longing. purple hued and sand-washed, with a heart that was guarded like a temple, he opened himself for that fraction of a minute and his song washed over me like the waves in the distance.

friday reception

an evening reception was held at the museum of the city of new york in honor of the soldiers that hai (hospital audiences) had brought up to new york for the weekend. the bus ride after the reception became an impromptu tour of times square.

spot scouting at coney island

i was romping through coney island in preparation for a wedding next weekend, looking for pretty and interesting places to shoot and checking out the light. half of coney island bristles with a sleepy danger, like a sideshow freak about to burst. the other half of coney island has that romantic faraway-ness of ocean surf and sunset waves.
