little alleyways that reek of history, conceived of in the minds of money and built by hardened hands of those with less. architecture that sweeps and juts, decorates and adorns. the buildings themselves seem to be suited down, just like the brokers and day traders and analysts who rush about these busy streets. exploring the area, there's a sense of these endless layers of action and interaction.. lots which is left unsaid or unknown. i wonder what goes on in this building or who works in that building and what it is they do. while much of manhattan has the feel of youth to me, the financial district is strictly salt 'n pepper hair, distinguished accent, oxfords and hush puppies, french cut and french press. oh yes, and that bothersome construction and those workers. dear lord, you wish they could keep things tidy around here.

friends with strangers in omaha

upon first meeting minwin and experiencing life magical, people's reactions invariably range from confusion and denial to acceptance and wonderment. it's all perfectly valid within the course of human emotion after all. but for everyone with the courage and curiosity to embrace such an opportunity, we trip the light electric and momentarily leave behind the confines of regularity.
the first group i met as i was walking back to the hotel from friday night drinks with the wedding party. they were party hopping and looking for a fun time, though they seemed lost and unsure of how to continue. ah, if only they realized what was right before them (minwin = party in a box). alas, there was only a single believing soul in that group, who i was happy to talk to. they hurriedly ran off almost forgetting their case of beers, ready to try their luck with the night.
the second group i stumbled across near the end of saturday night's festivities. they'd come from another wedding party and appeared to be winding down. while a slow exhaustion had crept over me as the night was progressing, i pepped back up when i met this group. they were interesting personalities who were probably as curious about me as i was about them. i was happy to see they were playful.

there was a 12 piece brass czech polka band. and they were good! sweet and melodic and upbeat. the singers had lilting voices that see-sawed their way to your inner child, like warm coffee cake on a blustery winter day.
i stopped to talk with a woman who was sitting with the band. she was quietly observant, and made a small figure in her chair (i think she was trying to be inconspicuous). we chatted and she pointed to her husband, who was playing the trumpet in the corner. they'd been married for 50 years and nowadays he invited her out with the band so she wouldn't have to be at home alone. then she nervously and politely refused to have her photo taken. she also declined a dance. she was very sweet.

a gallery showcasing livewire entertainment, the incredibly fun live band at pj & steve's wedding at tavern on the green in central park. everyone had such a great time jumping and jiving to their music. i'd definitely recommend them for that touch of spontaneity and personality. i almost wished they would have come crooning through the crowd.

omaha by way of kansas

heading to the airport to catch my flight for omaha this weekend, i got an email from nico telling me my flight had been cancelled. bad weather they said. "arrrrrgh!" she wrote. i called her and told her i'd get to omaha come hell or high water.
as i was waiting in line at the airport to reschedule my flight, i chatted with fellow travellers whose plans had also been affected. a light drizzle had settled over newark. we commiserated over our poor luck and then i suggested we cash in our karma brownie points for good luck.
at that moment, heather the groom's sister tapped me on the shoulder and exclaimed!.. "you're minwin the photographer. i'm booking tickets to kansas city right now. d'you wanna come with me?" she was so excited. "my uncle will pick us up and drive us to omaha from there." abso-fricken-lutely!
minutes later our tickets had been rerouted, we waltzed through security and plopped ourselves down in a half-empty plane to kansas city. three hours after that, we were sallying down to land. i looked out the window through which the most beautiful golden sunlight was streaming, and saw tiny specks of cows grazing in the neighboring fields. i was surprised they weren't more spooked by the noise of the planes.
at the airport, we were met by heather's uncle pat & aunt neta as well as jim & shirley. they were full of hugs and smiles as we made introductions. we claimed our bags and headed outside, where i was struck by the gorgeousness of the weather. it reminded me almost exactly of southern california. i closed my eyes and smiled, letting the evenness of it soak in.

the amazing weather held up on saturday, gracing nico & andrew's wedding day with sparkle and shine. i don't think you could have prayed for better weather, especially for nebraska. congratulations you two.. it was so fun playing together. more photos to come..
