oh what a lovely time it's sure to be! both m+t's friends and family are extremely laidback and super friendly. it was very much like giving candy to a baby, watching the excitement and enthusiasm bubble forth. i know, that sounds a little sinister, but it's not meant to be. gosh, i'm loving my job.

philly to seattle

the drive from philly to seattle (and back) in early april was the longest i've ever ridden anywhere. i think i'm still processing through the entirety of the experience. part of me is really glad to have seen everything i did as i passed from state to state, seeing the countryside roll by like clouds on a lazy summer day. and the other part of me totally rejects the experience, because really, you can get up and leave after you've watched the clouds for an hour. i still can't believe i spent seven whole days just sitting in a van. just. sitting. in. a. van. for. seven. days. jeeshh.

california shootings

driving up the california coast from orange county to los angeles, everything is concrete freeway and desperate drivers by your side. the city starts to fall by the wayside as we reach past ventura and start into the beach counties surrounding santa barbara. the ocean is an expanse at my side, faintly whispering to me as i keep on. pismo beach darts by, hardly noticed except for a recollected moment from the big lebowski.
somewhere two hours into the drive and past santa barbara, the route snakes inland through these unnaturally vibrant yellow-green hills. trees and small clusters of woodsy chapparal soon emerge. i imagine california in a long-ago pristine past, where paved roads were a glimmer in someone's eye and this beautiful countryside stretched to infinity, unbroken.

darlene finds a new home

it's funny, a number of people came up to me on the last day of the iapp conference and each one of them told me that i should give darlene the pink hippo away. she ended up going to this woman, who if i remember correctly, was the first to make the suggestion. she wanted darlene for her grand daughter, who happens to love pink. bye-bye darlene! enjoy your pretty in pink empire.
